Enjoy lunch in style. Friday at 11:30 a.m., The OC* of Anaheim presents an advisers’ luncheon in the Grand Salon E with a movie theme. Hosted by the local committee members, one of whom will be present at each table in the dining room, the luncheon will create a welcome-to-the-convention atmosphere so that each adviser attending, whether an“old-timer” or a first-timer, will feel engaged in the experience that is the JEA/NSPA national convention. Tickets are still available for $35. To make a reservation for the Friday advisers’ luncheon, contact Mike Gesellchen at mike (at) studentpress (dot) org or (612) 625-1857. Friday’s luncheon is sponsored by Screen Five.
Welcome Advisers. The OC* of Anaheim, presents an evening reception just for you. Friday night, April 18, 8:30 to 11 p.m. in the Orange County Room, the local committee honors you with a dessert and coffee reception featuring piano background music by Rich Allen, former Hawthorne High School adviser. Please join other advisers for conversation and connections at this black and white themed evening — it’s your time to dress up if you wish. Check the convention program and updates for details. This reception is sponsored by Adobe.
The screening will take place Saturday, April 19, at 8:30 p.m. in the Marquis Ballroom at the Anaheim Marriott. It is open to JEA/NSPA convention attendees only.
From Paramount:
AMERICAN TEEN is the touching and hilarious Sundance hit that follows the lives of four teenagers — a jock, the popular girl, the artsy girl and the geek –- in one small town in Indiana through their senior year of high school. We see the insecurities, the cliques, the jealousies, the first loves and heartbreaks, and the struggle to make profound decisions about the future.
Filming daily for 10 months, filmmaker Nanette Burstein (ON THE ROPES, THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE) developed a deep understanding of her subjects. The result is a film that goes beyond the enduring stereotypes of high school to render complex young people trying to find their way into adulthood.
Hannah Bailey is smart and beautiful, but a misfit in her high school. She is a liberal, atheist living in a traditional, Christian, conservative town and dreams of moving to California after graduation. Colin Clemens is the star of the high school basketball team — and in Indiana, basketball is everything. Colin is under enormous pressure this year playing not only to make his town, his school, and his father proud, but for a college scholarship. Jake Tusing is considered to be a nerd in high school. Though quite funny and charming one-on-one, he is painfully shy in group situations and crushed with self-doubt. In his senior year he vows that nothing will stand in the way of him finding a girlfriend. Megan Krizmanich is the student council Vice President and the youngest daughter of a prominent local surgeon, anxiously awaiting word from Notre Dame University admissions. Wealthy, pretty, smart and popular, she rules her high school - just don’t get on her bad side. When Megan’s peers challenge her authority, she can’t help but take action, even if it means risking her future. Mitch Reinholdt is an attractive and charming Varsity basketball jock with a soft side. When he puts his social status on the line, avoiding his popular friends for dates with artsy Hannah Bailey, he strains to maintain his reputation while discovering a new side of himself.
With extraordinary intimacy and a great deal of humor, AMERICAN TEEN captures the pressures of growing up -– pressures that come from one’s peers, one’s parents, and not least, oneself.
Now that the earlybird deadline has passed, NSPA has posted a list of the publications, schools, individuals and vendors registered for Anaheim. Find out who else is coming from your area and make plans to meet with friends and colleagues.
The list will be updated every business day until the start of the convention. Look forward to seeing everyone!

TO THE HOTEL: We recommend Super Shuttle or another similar shuttle from the airport. A cab would be very expensive (about $85). The hotel does not have a shuttle service for guests.
TO FOOD: It’s a couple blocks to some “sit-down” restaurants. The Garden Walk is about 10 minutes. In the sunny weather, you’ll love it. There is a California Pizza Kitchen, Cheesecake Factory, McCormick & Schmick’s, Bubba Gump’s already and more to open this month. The Block at Orange (about $12 cab fare including tip) has several unique restaurants and a food court plus shopping. Closer to the hotel are Morton’s and Ruth’s Chris steak houses. Buca di Beppo and a few fast-food restaurants are nearby but just as much of a walk.
TO DISNEY: Disneyland’s main entrance is a short walk away. Save the $3 shuttle fare for more Mickey gear. The walk is even closer if you go to the Garden Walk restaurants and then to Disney.
TO FUN STUFF A LOT CLOSER: The hotel is large and beautiful and will be the center of activity. There is a HUGE Starbucks, a Pizza Hut grab-n-go, and two full-service restaurants. There is also a very nice pool. Students will be tempted to cool off and socialize on the deck. Finally, we have a student dance on Friday and Saturday nights. We also have a TV show screening and movie screening on Saturday evening. This is all at the Anaheim Marriott.
Oh yeah, we also have a convention with learning sessions, contests, trade show and critiques!
Best of luck in planning how you will fit it all in!
